Algae Cultivation Extension Short Course (ACES)
About Aces
The Algae Cultivation Extension Short-course (ACES) is a free online curriculum that provides aquaculture extension education as the outreach component of the Algae Technology Educational Consortium (ATEC). These short courses aim to equip students with fundamental skills and techniques, enhancing their entry into various fields within the algal industry.
ACES is divided into two components: macroalgae and microalgae. Both sections of ACES are planning on hands-on labs at various times during the year for students to travel to Santa Fe, Maine, or potentially other locations to gain real-life experience. Find more information and access to content below.
In the current 2023–2024 fiscal year, we have reached :

ACES PART 1: MACROALGAE
ACES Part 1 focuses on macroalgae (seaweed) and is designed for individuals already engaged in the fishing, shellfishing or aquaculture industry who wish to acquire fundamental skills in cultivating these aquatic plants, and serves as an entry point for those aspiring to enter the field of seaweed farming.
ACES PART 2: MICROALGAE
ACES Part 2 covers microalgae cultivation in a short course modeled after a real college-level course. This section aims to help the algae biomass industry enhance their skills and techniques. It enables companies to find individuals with some aquaculture knowledge who need to learn the basics of cultivating large quantities of microalgae.
